When a dog got fitter than the owner!

When a dog got fitter than the owner!

When a dog got fitter than the owner! Once in a while, you come across strange and amusing incidents, this is one I thought would be worth mentioning. Here`s an example of how people can use personal trainers for other things other than training, many people see you as a therapist and will tell you anything and everything, I’ve had my share of those but this would have to be the strangest of all time.

A very strange request indeed, actually possibly the strangest of them all was when a lady called me asking can you train 2 together, I said yes, and I do regularly so it wouldn’t be a problem at all. She said, “I’ll see if Winston can make it, he’s not been feeling too good lately, but he needs to lose some puppy fat. “What she didn’t tell me was that the other person was actually a dog! so we arranged the first session.

The extra client is a dog!

When Katie first walked into the gym, I was expecting to see a husband or son, not a dog! With her saying he needs to lose some puppy fat I figured it would most likely be a young kid. She proudly said, “Meet Winston.” Winston was a bulldog! “He needs to lose a few pounds, like me” well she was right on both counts! But what exactly am I supposed to do for an overweight bulldog? I’m a personal trainer, not a vet!

My brain was on overdrive thinking about this, and I quickly came up with a solution. As this was 9pm and no one else was in the gym I had an idea, we tied Winston to a treadmill, and at very low speed started it up for 30 minutes. Winston took to it immediately and began his exercise program! He would walk for 30 minutes then crash out on the gym floor for 30 minutes and snore like crazy!

The whole session was based around Winston! Katie would spend the first 30 minutes talking about anything, like the main talking point on the news that particular day, or the weather, anything to avoid training. Basically, she was nuts! Very nice lady, but totally nuts! It was very obvious listening to the way she talked about Winston, that she considered him human and not a dog! I understand many people consider their dogs as being real family members (which they are) but surely this is taking it a little too far?

After a couple of sessions Winston would walk straight over to the treadmill and wait for me to start it for him! He acted like he enjoyed it, then she would take over the treadmill after Winston had got his 30 minutes in, and walk even slower than Winston had, and keep talking about nothing the whole time! Strange for sure, but she was paying the same rate as two people would pay so it was very easy money for me! As I’d been in the gym most of the day it was nice to finish off the day with an easy session, and it didn’t come much easier than training Winston (and Katie).

The dog is getting fitter, the owner isn’t!

They came together for 3 months in which time Winston got in pretty good shape, and actually worked out harder than Katie did! He lost 10 pounds and became quite muscular looking once he shed some `puppy` fat, while she lost nothing at all, but was very happy with Winston`s results! They quit coming soon after, as she claimed he had reached his goal!

Another dog needs training? No thank you!

She did contact me the week after to ask if I could train her friend’s dog, a 120lb Rottweiler! Apparently, the dog had anger issues and they thought some exercise might help. I politely declined taking on that new client!

Never heard from her again so hopefully Winston kept the weight off and stayed in good shape, as for her… well, hopefully she’s doing ok too!
